creativeShift has been a leading force in the development of Arts on Referral in Bristol for 15 years. Led by a team of arts professionals - each with over 25 years’ experience of delivering community arts projects - we spearheaded the Bristol Creative Health Ecosystem, through bringing together key organisations across the areas of social prescribing, healthcare provision, community arts, culture underpinned by academic research and evaluation.
We are also the leading partner for the
West of England Creative Health Network (launched in early 2026), alongside Bristol City Council that aims to grow a more integrated and collaborative creative health ecosystem across the region to more effectively support local communities.
Working collaboratively with healthcare providers and arts practitioners, we exist to bring the positive health impacts of art and creativity to people who are vulnerable to social isolation and physical or mental health challenges. We do this through a unique and holistic
pathway, a model that has made us a highly trusted and respected partner for public health services.
We know that making art and engaging with cultural activities reduces stress and anxiety, and promotes relaxation, social connection and curiosity, as well as building life skills and resilience. There is also strong evidence that social prescribing can reduce pressure on primary care and save costs. As such, we are committed to advocating for the vital role that arts on referral plays in supporting public health, and creating sustainable, effective programmes that make real, lasting difference to people’s lives.

“It wasn’t just about being creative, the personal benefits were much wider reaching. It helped to: challenge my anxiety in a new social setting and environment; gave me new evidence of coping, building a sense of resilience and hope to build upon; provided a mental break from my eating disordered thoughts; an opportunity for my body to feel relaxed and safe."
